HIPAA Toolbox

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was enacted by the U.S. Congress in 1996. Title II of HIPAA, known as the Administrative Simplification (AS) provisions, requires the establishment of national standards for electronic health care transactions and national identifiers for providers, health insurance plans, and employers.

The Administration Simplification provisions also address the security and privacy of health data. The standards are meant to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the nation's health care system by encouraging the widespread use of electronic data interchange in the US health care system.

There are civil and criminal sanctions for violations of the provisions of HIPAA. Health care practitioners are “Covered Entities” under this federal legislation and regulations, and as such must be familiar with the basic requirements.

This section of the TSG website is dedicated to assisting health care practitioners understand and implement the relevant provisions of the law. We will post lectures, slide sets, policies and procedures, and any other tools that we feel will assist in this endeavor. If you have resources for medical practitioners we would be happy to post them on this site. Please contact us if you have resources or ideas for the HIPAA Toolbox.
