1.  Introduction.

In the year 2000 it is widely accepted that in certain instances of irreversible or terminal illness, the initiation of heroic, or potentially life-sustaining treatment may be both medically unsound and unjustified. Health care institutions and medical societies have developed carefully drawn policies that set forth legally and ethically sound parameters within which physicians may make decisions regarding DNR orders.
