Patients leave the
hospital AMA for a variety of reasons. Most
consistent among several studies of patient’s
leaving AMA is the association between substance
abuse, especially alcohol, and AMA discharge. Some
of the other common reasons for signing out AMA
relate to patient dissatisfaction, including
disliked the physician; expected a shorter stay;
and expected more help from the staff. It is quite
common for the patient to express a need to leave
to take care of personal, family, or financial
affairs. Some patients simply feel better, and
don’t feel the need for continuing management. In
one study, 82% of AMA patients left because they
didn’t agree with the physician’s management
plan.
